Once you have purchased a chiminea, whether it is steel, clay or cast iron you should look into the ways in which you can take care of your chiminea in order to prolong its life, keeping it in perfect condition and protecting from any easily avoidable damage and weathering.
Chiminea covers are a necessity for clay chimineas in particular, if clay goes through a sudden change in temperature it is likely to start cracking. A crack in the chiminea will ultimately reduce the burn of the fire and the overall performance. If you cannot store your clay chiminea in a shed or garage during the winter you should take a look at the padded chiminea covers available to prevent your clay freezing and eventually cracking.
Cast iron chimineas on the other hand do not have the same requirements as the clay models and are a little hardier. Many people actually prefer the worn and vintage look of the cast iron so purposely leave their chiminea out in the weather conditions to weather and age until they can achieve the look they are aiming for before using a cover to prevent any further damage. If you prefer your chiminea in pristine condition you will need to keep it covered as soon as it goes outside. It is also important to note that it is not just the rain and frost that can cause damage to your chiminea. Daily exposure to UV rays from the sun will result in any patterns or colours on the product fading. If you have a traditionally decorated chiminea with coloured paintings or patterns it would definitely be worth covering this as much as possible to prolong the life and vibrancy of the design.
Buying the right size chiminea cover
Chiminea covers are available in a variety of sizes; these tend to go from small to extra-large with custom made covers available for the bigger feature chimineas such as a traditional outdoor pizza oven or unique designs. The measurements tend to be focused on the height of the chiminea rather than the width or style so if you wish to also cover the legs of the chiminea you should take this into account when measuring up!
Chiminea covers range in price with most average sized covers available under £15 with only the larger, more custom sized or padded covers costing any more than this. Basic chiminea covers can be purchased for just a few pounds. You may also find when purchasing a chiminea many come supplied with a protective cover so look out for this before buying another!
Chiminea covers are constructed from a range of materials but the most common and effective are tough, waterproof, hardwearing polyester. The cover is fitted simply by pulling it over the top of the chiminea and being fixed into place with either a drawstring or elasticated bottom to prevent it from blowing off.
